Design of chemical tools for future biology and biotechnology
  Detailed understanding of the mechanisms of enzymatic reactions, as well as the applications of relevant information for practical purposes, is quite important for furtherdevelopments of biotechnology, molecular biology, medicine, and others. Prof. Makoto Komiyama has made great contributions in these fields (bioorganic chemistry and bioinorganic chemistry). He already published more than 530 original papers, and total number of citations is more than 10,000 (H-index = 54). He is also an author of 125 reviewarticles and 12 books. He received many academic awards including ”The Award of the Society of Polymer Science, Japan” and “The Chemical Society of Japan Award”, which are two major societies on chemistry in Japan. Furthermore, two of his five-year projects (from 2006 to 2010 and from 2010 to 2014) were selected to a Grant-in-Aid for Specially Promoted Research consecutively. This grant is the largest among all the JSPS Kakenhi projects, and only 10-15 proposals are every year selected from all the fields of science. Accordingly, this consecutive granting is really a rare case, providing strong evidence for exceptional importance of his achievements.
In 1970-1990, he developed various models of enzymes, and clarified the enzymatic mechanisms in terms of detailed kinetic and spectroscopic analysis. Cyclodextrins were most often used as enzyme models. In 1976, he wrote a book “Cyclodextrin Chemistry” with Prof. Myron L. Bender, which was the first book on these unique cyclic oligosaccharides. He also wrote a textbook in this area with Prof. Bender; “The Bioorganic Chemistry of Enzymatic Catalysis”, John-Wiley & Sons, New York (1984)). Since then, he has been one of the leaders in the field of bioorganic chemistry. In these two decades, his research interests gradually shifted from these fundamental studies to practical applications. In fact, he designed and prepared many kinds of chemical tools which can accomplish what naturally occurring enzymes cannot. With the use of these new man-made tools, he envisioned new biotechnology where the limitations of naturally occurring enzymes (and thus of currentbiotechnology) were overcome.
